About Dr. Dantzler

I am currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Faculty Advisor to the School of Cities at the University of Toronto - St. George (UofT). I am also a Research Affiliate with the National Initiative on Mixed-Income Communities at Case Western University. Prior to joining UofT, I held appointments in the Urban Studies Institute at Georgia State University and the Department of Sociology at Colorado College. I have also served as a Fulbright Scholar within the Department of Sociology at UofT as well as a Scholar-In-Residence within the Institute for Research on Poverty at the University of Wisconsin - Madison.

During the 2023-2024 Academic Year, I will be serving as an E2S2 Policy Scholar within the Center for an Equitable Economy and Sustainable Society at Howard University.

“My research lies at the nexus of housing policy, urban poverty, race and ethnic relations, and community development.”

As an urbanist, I tend to focus on the forces surrounding neighborhood change including location affordability, neighborhood satisfaction, and community resistance. I am keenly interested in how and why neighborhoods change and how communities and public policymakers create or react to those changes.

As a professor, I look holistically at how students learn and grow. As a first-generation college student, I bring a unique, eclectic approach to teaching and pedagogy. Having numerous experiences within higher education administration, specifically within student and academic affairs, I employ a variety of techniques in the classroom that allow me to connect with students across all demographics.

With an emphasis on community development, my research, teaching, and service are centered on issues of equity and inclusivity.

“My overall goal is to change how people see themselves, to question their own positionality, and to work collaboratively with others to create a more inclusive, democratic society.”
